How to use shipping thresholds to increase AOV on Shopify

A more flexible and often more profitable approach is to combine:

Free shipping thresholds are the most common approach. You set a minimum spend where customers unlock free standard shipping.


Before implementing, it is important to understand:

  • shipping costs

  • margins


The goal is to ensure that your free shipping threshold is not going to eat into your profitability.

Your AOV is $65.50

You normally charge $12.50 for Standard

Shipping Offer: Spend $85 and get free shipping

This encourages customers to add another item to their cart to avoid shipping fees.


Option 2: express shipping upgrade thresholds

This is the underused opportunity.

Instead of removing shipping costs entirely, you upgrade the customer experience.

Example

  • Pay standard shipping

  • Spend $100 and get a free express shipping upgrade


The customer still pays for shipping, but gets faster delivery as a reward for spending more.

For many customers, faster delivery is more appealing than saving a few dollars. 


Express shipping upgrades perform best when urgency matters, and a customer has a clear reason to want it fast.


Event-driven purchases require speed, such as online fashion stores- where customers might need an outfit for a specific occasion this weekend or an upcoming party. They have a date in mind and need delivery on time. 


Express upgrades are also effective for online stores selling gifts and personalised products. Last-minute gifting is extremely common for birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, anniversaries, and Christmas. 


Customers will pay or spend more to ensure it arrives on time. That is why it works so well as an AOV lever. You are not just offering speed. You are solving a real problem. It also positions your brand as premium rather than discount-driven.

How to implement both together

The strongest setup is using both thresholds at different levels.


Example structure

Spend $80 → free standard shippingSpend $120 → free express upgrade

This creates two clear incentives:

  • A lower threshold to encourage action

  • A higher threshold to push AOV even further

This tiered structure gives customers a clear reason to continue increasing their cart value.


How to present shipping thresholds effectively

Visibility is everything. If the customer cannot see the incentive, you can’t influence their behaviour.


Show progress in the cart

“You’re $18 away from free shipping”“You’re $32 away from express delivery”

This keeps the reward visible throughout the purchase journey and encourages additional spending.


Mistakes to avoid

  • Setting thresholds unrealistically high

  • Failing to explain the difference between shipping tiers

  • Overcomplicating the offer

  • Hiding the incentive until checkout

If customers do not understand the reward, it will not influence behaviour.
